I am a senior majoring in Advertising and minoring in Interior Design. I am from a suburb of Chicago called Lake Forest. I came to OU for a couple of reasons. I hate the cold, my mom went here for a semester and loved it, I had to compete football wise with my sister who went to Alabama and when I was looking for schools, it was really important to me at the time that there was an accredited Interior Design program (because that was my intended major then).
My favorite class in my major so far is advertising media. I enjoy media planning which is essentially the plan of where to put ads and all the things that go behind it. At the moment, that is what I am planning to do with my life after graduation. I have no idea where yet but I am open to suggestions as well as job offerings.
I am a crazy dog lady but I don’t have any dogs here with me at school. So, instead, I dog sit for people in the Norman area to get my dog fix. I also volunteer at Second Chance Animal Shelter (if you haven’t been and like dogs or cats…you should check it out). At home my family has two dogs. One of them is a black Labrador retriever named Millie and the other is a Shih Tzu/West Highland Terrier mix named Gracie.
I like photography, reading and cooking. I am also interested in nutrition and if I could go back in time and change my major I probably would switch it to nutrition. Seeing as I am a senior and that I have limited resources, it’s not an option for me at the moment. I plan on taking classes online or figuring something out in the future that would enable me to study nutrition. If I had more time in the day, I would cook more and cook healthier things. Feel free to check out my online portfolio here.

Oh, your dogs are so cute, Annie! Maybe they can make an appearance in some of the stories you write for class this semester. I have two cats, but if I magically had more hours in the day, it would be so much fun to have dogs too. I get to play with our neighbor's dog (a cute little Lowchen).
ReplyDeleteAnd your Portfolio looks gorgeous. I repeat: GORGEOUS. So if you end up doing a Storybook website for this class, please feel free to use whatever web design tools you are comfortable with. I am a writer but not a web designer, so I just use tools that allow me to publish content quickly... but I am so in awe of people who can create a beautiful site and lovely graphics like you have done there. The photographs from what looks like a pow-wow: absolutely beautiful!
So, thank you for sharing all of that, and I hope this class can be a chance for you to experiment in creating wonderful things with words too! :-)
Your dogs are so adorable omg, I have a shitzu/bishon frisse mix named sophie and gracie reminds me so much of her. I think its really cool that you came here all the way from Chicago, and I'm glad you didnt follow your sister Alabama. I also think its funny that you started out interior design and said you would change to nutrition if you had the chance, because thats exactly what my girlfriend did freshman year.
ReplyDeleteHi, Annie! I have to agree what you commented on my blog, we are so similar! I am actually from the O'Fallon area, so opposite side of the state. Not as fun as Chicago though. ;) And wow, I hate the cold too! Every time there is a chance of snow/ice I freak out because I have no clue how to drive on it.
ReplyDeleteYour dogs are so precious and I LOVE Second Chance! Do you follow The Dogist on Instagram? If you don't, check it out! I know you would love it.
Hey! I didn't follow them before but I now am...thanks for your suggestion!
DeleteYour dogs are seriously the cutest! I had a couple dogs growing up when I lived at home, and they were my best friends! I do though, have a cat now who is the sweetest thing ever. I hope to get another dog once I have the time outside of school! Also, that's awesome you moved here from Chicago! I actually have a lot of friends that live in Chicago, so that's awesome. I have heard so many cool things about it, unfortunately I have never been there myself. I hope to go one day though!
ReplyDeleteHi Annie,
ReplyDeleteIts really cool that you have so many fun hobbies and that you have found a way to explore all of them during your time at OU. I can definitely understand what you are feeling as a senior who only now feels like they have a better grip on what they want to study. While my desired major is still within the realm of the two majors I am pursing now, I cannot really go back and change it now so it is a matter of integrating my love for linguistics into the work I do now.
I also have a black Labrador retriever and aren't they the best dogs? Millie and Gracie are both adorable!
It is awesome how you are able to still pursue interior design even though you changed majors. I, too, hate the cold to an extent. I do not like being too hot or too cold. I prefer jacket weather.
ReplyDeleteYour portfolio looked really nice. You put a lot of effort in it. I especially like the photo for “Romain Calm.”
Oh wow, I love dogs so much, I had a boxer that lived to be 19 years old and it was amazing. Super jealous that you get to dog sit for people, that sounds like the best job I could think of for a college student to have. I bet you will be able to find something in the nutrition area that you would want, it does stink when you think about doing something different so late in the game, but if you truly desire to do something you'll find a way to do it. Even though Alabama has nattys you can just talk about the Sugar Bowl non-stop, so boomer sooner.
ReplyDeleteHi Annie! I haven’t ever been to Second Chance Animal Shelter, but you have stirred my curiosity. It’s so cool that you volunteer there! Are people just able to come in and play with the animals?
ReplyDeleteAlso, it’s cool that you’re going to continue trying to study what you enjoy even after you graduate with a different degree. Good luck with the job search!
If you go in the mornings, you usually just help out with things like folding laundry and things like that. But later in the day you take dogs out to this big pen they have so they can run around and play. It is a lot of fun!
DeleteOh goodness I love dogs to and that picture is super cute. My family and I have adopted 5 dogs in the past so we're so grateful to anyone who volunteers to keep those places running. As for the college major, haha yeah I've not really had regrets about my major per se but I often wish that I could start over and take some classes (and a minor) in things that I know I'm interested in now. It certainly gets harder at the senior level to branch out more when you're still figuring out what exactly you want to do with your life and your degree. I hope you're able to focus on what you really enjoy after college regardless of your degree (although we all know something that can be difficult to manage).
ReplyDeleteHi Annie! I agreed with you that if I have a chance to restart my first year in college I will think carefully before deciding on my major and courses. It’s a bit late for me too since I’m now a senior in Chemical Engineering. I don’t know if you know this, but OU hires students in advertising to help them in creating ads for newspaper and flyers around the school. I don’t know if it is still available, but you can check it out at jobs.ou.edu. By the way, there are nutrition classes offer, and you don’t need to be in the major to take it.
ReplyDeleteHi Annie!!
ReplyDeleteI laughed at your Alabama VS Oklahoma comment!! Glad you chose the right school between those two! I have been to Chicago twice now and I love it. I would stay just for the pizza alone but I absolutely hate the cold and cold outweighs pizza unfortunately. I will say, that even though you are a senior, it isn't to late to major in something you really want to major in and feel passionate about. I changed my major my senior year and don't regret it at all!!! It was a scary decision but I'm glad I made the leap. I hope you are able to take the nutrition classes and pursue what you really want to do in life!
Hello Annie, it is nice to meet you. I am also a senior at the University of Oklahoma. I am a political science student. Media seems like an exciting field to get involved in. I don't plan to be a politician or even work the direct political sector. I am planning on attending law school, although I am not certain what type of law I want to practice yet. Oklahoma must seem a lot different than Chicago. I bet you miss your dogs inspite of watching our people's dogs. Dogs are always so happy to see you. I am absolutely a dog person. I hope you are enjoying your senior year of college and find a good job after graduation. I am looking forward to reading one of your stories.
ReplyDeleteI think it is awesome that you are minoring in interior design! I always thought it would be cool to do something along those lines but I am not crafty enough for that! I think it is great that you volunteer for Second Chance Animal Shelter. I haven’t been there yet but I will check it out soon. I love cooking too, I mainly bake but I love to make anything that has to do with chicken and any type of desert there is. I hope you get to study nutrition! I know that there is a class called the full plate that is offered free this semester you might check into it if you want!
ReplyDeleteI clicked the link to your portfolio and you are a really talented individual with a great eye. It seems as if you were built for your major, which is wonderful! I also feel like if I had the means and opportunity to change my major I would. I love all that I have learned and throughout my coursework as a Liberal Studies major I have fell in love with various cultures and how society works. If given the opportunity I think I would focus more of my degree in that area and I would have taken WAY MORE literature courses...Let’s be honest I’d probably double major because I’m a big nerd and I want to know/do everything. Who knows maybe we will both get the opportunity to get another degree in the future!
ReplyDeleteHi Annie! Your dogs are adorable, I have four back home so being at school without them is torture. One of my good friends has a similar major to you and I think it is so impressive because I am a science major so spacial organization and visual things are not my strong suit. If I was not a broke college student I would love to cook every meal and always eat healthy things...I think nutrition is a very interesting subject and I also wish I had more opportunities to learn more about it. I look forward to reading your stories.
ReplyDeleteHi Annie!
ReplyDeleteI am also a senior at OU and chose to come here for its acredited medical program (undergrad and grad) and for it's beautiful campus and location. I share the family rirvalry that you do with your sister except my sister goes to Oklahoma State University. I am an animal lover so I empathisize with you when you say you need your 'dog fix'. I used to volunteer at Second Chance quite often but recently I have been busy with school and my job so it enables me to volunteer as much as I would like to. I hope you find an opportunity to do both of your passions in your major and with nutrition. I also love to cook and only wish that I had the money and time to cook healthy meals! I wish you luck for your last year and will look forward to reading your stories.
Wow Annie you have a lot of different interests. I love your photos. I tried clicking on the link within your portfolio and it didn't work so I checked out your Instagram instead. Do you charge for photos or is it something fun you do on the side? I'm looking for a cheap photographer to take some headshot like photos for me.
ReplyDeleteAnywho I feel you on the no plan after school thing I'm right there with you! I can wait to read your other posts.
Hey!
DeleteI do take headshots for people! I'll try again to get that link working but if you type in anniestrom.portfoliobox.io it should take you there. (just click on my name to get into the site) I usually charge about $50 for 30 minutes to an hour depending on what kind of images you want and if we need to walk to get there. Feel free to send me a message on Facebook or Instagram and I'll send you more details.
Annie!!! What?? I had no idea that you were an ad major and that you were minoring in interior design. Go Gaylord, also interior design is such a neat thing. Please feel free to come decorate my future apartment. ALSO THE FACT THAT YOU HAVE A SHIH TZU IS SO IMPORTANT TO ME. I have two back in Dallas that I love with my whole soul. It is my life dream to own a Shih Tzu named pickles one day. Looking forward to reading your stories!!
ReplyDeleteHey, Annie! It seems like you really keep busy between your major and working with dogs. I have four dogs at home myself, and two of them are rescue. I honestly probably miss them about as much as I miss the 'rents sometimes! It's pretty hard to be consistent in cooking and eating right every day. I don't know how you feel about this, but meal prep is a great way to stay on course if you have a free day at some point during the week. I look forward to reading on your blog!
ReplyDeleteMillie is adorable, just look at that face! I have a dog here at OU with me, he is a dachshund/terrier mix and I rescued him during my internship in Georgia. He brings me so much joy whenever I come home from a rough day at school. I agree with the cooking thing, it is hard to find the time to cook tasty and healthy meals. What I try to do is every Sunday I cook two to three large meals and freeze them for the remainder of the week, I alternate to keep it fresh and exciting.
ReplyDeleteHey Annie! So cool that you're majoring in advertising. I'm a creative media production major, but I've recently become really interested in advertising. Interior design also sounds like a cool area of study. I totally understand you wanting to get out of the cold! I'm such a baby about cold weather. Oklahoma is worth the tornadoes since it stays fairly warm all year. Also, your dogs are adorable!
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness those puppies are so cute!! That's very cool that you came to school here all the way from the Chicago area, I hope you like Oklahoma! I grew up north of Oklahoma City, but I'm originally from the Toronto area so we sort of have that in common. We also have a love of dogs in common... I have never wanted a dog so badly, but I just know that I would not have the time to give that it deserves. You can bet, though, that once I graduate my first trip will be to a shelter.
ReplyDeleteAnnie,
ReplyDeleteI can't imagine considering Oklahoma a warm place to live, but I'm from Texas and not Chicago, so there you go. I agree with your sentiment about cooking more, if only we had more time in the day.
Thanks so much for sharing. I wish you good luck with finishing this rest of this semester and graduation.
Andrew Wright
Nice to meet you Annie! I hope you are able to study nutrition in the future! I'm a Health and Exercise Science major and it deals with nutrition a little bit and it is pretty interesting. Your pups are adorable! Millie is very photogenic! Your major sounds really interesting too. I've always loved advertising and journalism and probably would have gone down that route had it not been for my interests in Health and Exercise Science. Good luck to you in the future and I hope you find a job and a location that you really enjoy, hopefully not anywhere cold!
ReplyDeleteHey Annie! I'm in PR, so I'm a Gaylord student as well! Go Gaylord. Ad and Interior Design is such a cool pairing. Both are so creative and clever, so I imagine you are a very cool person. I have no creativity, which is why I'm PR. Writing is the most creative I get. I'm also interested in nutrition, not as a major, just as a hobby. You could for sure learn a lot online, but of course it isn't the same as going to school for it.
ReplyDeleteHey! I really like your major and minor combo. It seems like you know what you want to do and that's really cool. You seem like a very creative person! I am majoring in PR and minoring in Spanish, but I have no idea what I really wanna do. Your dogs are super adorable, I love dogs as well. Good luck on your senior year and I look forward to reading your stories!
ReplyDeleteOkay, this is almost off-topic, but it has to be said: I completely love your blog design. Everything about it, from the heading font to the black-and-white color scheme of it all. The eye for the design makes more sense now that I’ve seen your photography portfolio, which is really, really cool.
ReplyDeleteAlso, your reasons for choosing OU cracked me up, and even though advertising would probably stress me out, after reading your explanation of media planning, I can definitely see how that would be enjoyable. Dog sitting sounds like loads of fun, too. I haven’t heard of the Second Chance Animal Shelter before, but I think my sister would definitely be interested in volunteering, so I’ll have to tell her about it. Best of luck with graduation and finding some nutrition classes in the future!
Nice to meet you Annie!
ReplyDeleteI actually considered becoming an interior design or advertising major at some point! Your advertising media class seems really interesting, and it’d be cool to learn about the strategies used to place ads.
Millie and Grace are adorable and I totally understand being a crazy dog lady. I’ve volunteered at shelters in the past and I’ve thought about doing it again sometime soon.
Your portfolio looks great by the way!
Hi Annie! Nice to meet you! I think it's awesome that you came to OU from Chicago! I haven't spent a lot of time up there, but the time that I have I was very happy to come home to warm Oklahoma. I'm miserable enough during the Oklahoma winter. Your puppies are so cute! I think it's really awesome that you get to spend time with animals while you volunteer! You get help the world and your soul.
ReplyDeleteI can't believe there are still introductions I haven't read/commented on at this point! Hi Annie, it's nice to meet ya! It's wonderful that you volunteer with Second Chance - it is such an amazing organization! I work at a cat hospital, and we work with Second Chance quite a bit. I'd volunteer there if I had a little more free time. I also hate the cold, so I don't blame you for moving away from Chicago. I've definitely been enjoying this prolonged summer.
ReplyDeleteHey Annie,
ReplyDeleteIt's really cool that you're from Illinois! I'm from the Champaign-Urbana area! Also if you want to work on ad placement, please try to make them less annoying for the rest of us! Definitely not opposed to ads, just their obtrusiveness sometimes. I also have a friend in Interior Design right now. Do you know Ryan Bermudez?
Anyway, best of luck to you!
Hey Annie, I too love dogs and I haven't gone to Second Chance but my sorority has partnered with them multiple times for events. Your puppies are so cute! I personally love labs. I love cooking too and it is so rewarding when you make something healthy that tastes good AND saves you money. If only there were more hours in the day am I right? Anyways, best of luck with your major and hopefully in the future you'll get the chance to study nutrition further!
ReplyDeleteHey Annie! I absolutely love your puppies! They are so adorable. I have a German Shepard mix and he is the love of my life. I also L-O-V-E cooking but sometimes between work and school, it's just hard to actually sit down and make a meal. Glad you chose to come to Oklahoma. I'm a Dallas native so for me, Norman is a bit colder.
ReplyDeleteHi Annie! I am not from Chicago but I love the city! Northwestern was one of my top choices for school! I love the cold and am a HUGE Chicago Bears fan! I actually got to go to a game up there last year! Both of my sisters attend Oklahoma State so I can completely understand the rivalry and wanting to compete football wise.
ReplyDeleteHi Annie!
ReplyDeleteIt's been a pleasure to read about you! I am a PR major so we are practically besties. I have a strong interest in ad placements and media buying as well, and hope that I get the opportunity to work for an agency that enables me to run/be a part of full campaign work for different companies.
Best of luck to you the last 2 weeks of this class and I look forward to reading your work!
